Baseball: Cancer survivor returns to play

A year ago, Jared Garcia lost his senior year at Whittier California because of bone cancer in his knee, similar to what pitcher Nick Hurtado of Corona Santiago is going through.

The good news, though, is Garcia’s cancer is in remission. He returned to school last September, got a hardship waiver from the Southern Section to have a fifth year of eligibility and on Friday in his first game back, he went three for three and threw an inning on the mound.

‘Jared is a remarkable young man,’ Coach Tony Nieto said.
