The Southern California regional playoff schedule was revised this season over concerns that too many games were being played in too small a window. The regional champions had to win four games in six days, often traveling long distances in the process. It was an incredible grind.

Now, just the opposite is happening. As Mater Dei Coach Gary McKnight pointed out after his team’s 75-73 semifinal victory over Taft on Saturday, the teams that win regional championships will play one game in 13 days before playing for a state title.

Mater Dei and Westchester each have a week to prepare for their Division I championship Saturday at the Galen Center, and the winner of that game will have another week to get ready for the state title game March 27.

‘What do you do with all those days?’ said McKnight, who gave his players today off.

McKnight suggested another revision in which teams play Tuesday and Friday during the first week of regional play and Tuesday and Saturday of the second week.
