Football: Santa Margarita football facing inquiry

The Southern Section has begun seeking information from Santa Margarita about possible rule violations involving the football program, section spokesman Thom Simmons said Tuesday.

‘Questions have been raised regarding the Santa Margarita football program, and we’re trying to get information on possible violations,’ Simmons said.

Santa Margarita recently hired Harry Welch as its new coach. Simmons declined to discuss specifics about the inquiry. He said Santa Margarita is cooperating in providing information

Welch was hired from St. Margaret’s and has been working as a special assistant to the president while running the football program. The Orange County Register is reporting that Commissioner Jim Staunton has met with the Santa Margarita administration and briefed the CIF Southern Section Executive Committee on the matter.
