Baseball: Henry Owens improves to 8-0

Junior left-hander Henry Owens of Huntington Beach Edison didn’t have his best stuff. He finished with a season-low eight strikeouts, but it was enough to beat Huntington Beach Marina, 4-2, in a Sunset League game. He improved to 8-0.

Tanner Phillips had two RBIs for the Chargers (13-6, 7-1).

In the Trinity League, Santa Ana Mater Dei defeated JSerra, 11-1.

There were lots of upsets Wednesday. Los Angeles Loyola stunned first-place West Hills Chaminade, 7-5, in a Mission League game. Brando Tessar and Jason D’Andrea hit home runs for Chaminade, which gave up seven unearned runs in the sixth inning.

In the Foothill League, Santa Clarita Golden Valley upset first-place Valencia, 7-6, on a two-run home run by Brandon Smith in the top of the seventh. Newhall Hart beat Saugus, 2-1. West Ranch defeated Canyon Country Canyon, 6-2. Randy Poe had two hits and two RBIs.

Simi Valley Royal got home runs from Ryan Tinkham and Cody Buckel in a 3-2 win over Simi Valley. Moorpark defeated Westlake, 4-0, with Matt Higginbotham striking out 11 and throwing a three-hitter.

In the West Valley League, Woodland Hills Taft defeated Birmingham, 8-0. Jerry Barajas threw a one-hitter. Cody deSpain hit a home run.

L.A. Cathedral (15-3, 7-1) defeated Mary Star, 24-11. David Sanchez, Chris Flores, Kyle Merrill and Phillip Perez had three hits apiece.
