Baseball: Henry Owens strikes out 17 in Edison victory

Junior left-hander Henry Owens of Huntington Beach Edison wanted to be on the mound when his team clinched its second consecutive Sunset League championship, so Coach Steve Lambright kept him in, and he finished with 17 strikeouts on Tuesday in the Chargers’ 12-2 victory over Newport Harbor.

Owens gave up five hits and walked five. He improved to 10-1 and set a school single-season strikeout record with 127.

La Mirada clinched the Suburban League championship with a 7-3 victory over Bellflower, rallying from a 3-0 deficit. La Mirada is 20-8 overall and has won 10 consecutive games.

Van Nuys Montclair Prep won the Olympic League championship after a 15-3 victory over L.A. Baptist in five innings. Ben McKendall, Blake Steele and Paul Aldape hit home runs for the Mounties (19-7, 9-2). Whittier Christian defeated Cerritos Valley Christian, 10-0, to improve to 16-9.
