Mater Dei left-hander Cory Hahn (12-1) isn’t as sharp as he has been. He has walked four batters, but he has given up two hits, and the Monarchs lead Simi Valley Royal, 3-0, after four innings on the strength of three unearned runs in the third at Blair Field.

In the fourth, Scott Hockenberry of Royal tried to score from third after a pitch got away from catcher Jeremy Martinez, but Martinez recovered quickly enough to fire the ball to Hahn to tag out Hockenberry.

And here’s some interesting news. The player with the two hits for Royal is catcher Ryan Tinkham, who had two hits in Friday’s quarterfinal victory over San Clemente in which he used a bat that was alleged to be illegal. He was using a different bat Tuesday but same result.
