Palos Verdes quarterback Zack Fixen enjoyed quite a first half... at San Pedro’s expense.

The six-foot, 175-pound junior torched the visiting Pirates for 83 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for a score as the Sea Kings have built a 21-3 lead over the first 24 minutes of this afternoon’s contest between Southern and Los Angeles City Section schools.

Fixen spiraled a perfectly-placed pass to Robby Kolanz along the left sideline and the junior wideout did the rest, making an over-the-shoulder catch for a 45-yard touchdown with 53 seconds left in the second quarter that gave the Sea Kings a 21-0 lead.

To its credit, San Pedro didn’t give up, driving 67 yards in six plays and averting a first-half shutout on a 44-yard field goal by Christian Gonzalez as time expired. Still, the Pirates will need to generate more offense to make a game of it in the second half.

San Pedro had to punt on four of its six possessions in the opening half. Perhaps the Pirates should consider using the hurry-up offense like they did on their last drive. They will get the ball first to start the third quarter.
