Valley Center of the San Diego Section was the likely choice from Southern California for the CIF state Division III bowl game, but Valley Center lost to Madison, 40-14, in the SDS Division IV championship game this morning, creating a wide-open competition for the Division III bowl spot.

It means Lancaster Paraclete (12-1), Garden Grove (12-1), and Lompoc (10-3) become immediate contenders if they win section titles this weekend. But with the top four teams in last week’s Cal-Hi bowl rankings losing, San Diego Madison (12-1) might be the front runner. In the past five days, Madison has defeated the teams ranked fourth (Olympian) and first (Valley Center) in those rankings, avenging their lone loss to Olympian in the process.
