Boys’ basketball: Harvard-Westlake wins 3A title

Inglewood’s Rhon Mitchell missed a game-tying running bank shot with nine seconds left and North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake has hung on for a 47-45 victory in the Southern Section Division 3A championship game at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Lewis Dix got the rebound of Mitchell’s miss and was immediately fouled by Inglewood’s Dammond Rogers with three seconds let. Dix missed the first free throw and the ball went out of bounds off of Harvard-Westlake, giving Inglewood the ball under its own basket with 0.9 seconds left.

The Sentinels got the ball to midcourt, but could not get a shot off in time.

Damiene Cain had 12 points and 11 rebounds and Zena Edosomwan added 11 points and 15 rebounds for top-seeded Harvard-Westlake (27-4).

Julius Bilbrew had 15 points and nine rebounds and Mitchell added 10 points for third-seeded Inglewood (24-7), which outscored the Wolverines 17-7 in the fourth quarter. Bilbrew’s three-pointer pulled the Sentinels to within 46-45 with 1:51 left.

Harvard-Westlake led 25-22 at halftime and 40-28 through three quarters.
