We have our first champion at the state track and field meet at Clovis Buchanan High, and it’s Newport High junior Ethan Cochran in the boys’ discus.

Cochran won with a throw of 185 feet 9 inches, edging Loyola’s Nick Budincich, who had a throw of 178-05. San Gorgonio’s Ryan Hunter-Simms was third in 176-06.

All three throws were shorter than the respective competitors had posted in the preliminaries, possibly because of the heavier, denser air associated with the wet weather.

By the way, it has stopped raining.
