Boys’ basketball: It’s a package deal as Isaac and Daniel Hamilton transfer to St. John Bosco

Brothers Isaac and Daniel Hamilton are transferring to St. John Bosco from Crenshaw, giving new Braves Coach Derrick Taylor one of the top incoming duos in Southern California.

‘That’s a heck of a start, to have players of that caliber coming in,’ Taylor said Wednesday after confirming that the brothers had enrolled.

Isaac Hamilton, who will be a junior, was a first team All-City Section selection last season after averaging 19.5 points per game at Crenshaw. Daniel, who will be a sophomore, was a wing player who averaged nearly 10 points as a freshman while playing starter minutes with the Cougars.

Crenshaw Coach Ed Waters seemed almost resigned to losing the pair before hearing that their departure had become official.

‘Transfers are a part of L.A. city basketball,’ Waters said.

Taylor called the arrival of the Hamiltons ‘an opportunity to start my career at Bosco with flat-out stars,’ though he would not go so far as to say he had the firepower to take on nationally renown league rival Mater Dei. St. John Bosco has not won a league title since 1995.

Isaac and Daniel are the younger brothers of former Texas standout Jordan Hamilton, who was selected 26th overall in the first round of the NBA draft in June by the Dallas Mavericks. Taylor said he believed the younger Hamiltons would eventually join their elder sibling in the NBA.

But first it’s on to taking on the Monarchs and the Trinity League.

‘If you want to compete with the big boys,’ Taylor said, ‘you have to have star players.’

He’s got at least two now.
