Carson receiver Darreus Rogers is having a potentially record-setting night, but his team trails Long Beach Poly, 18-12, at halftime of the intersectional showdown at Long Beach Veterans Stadium.

Rogers has 10 catches for 192 yards, including touchdown grabs of 68 and 34 yards. On his 68-yard scoring catch, Rogers corralled the ball near the sideline and then ran back toward the middle of the field before reaching the end zone. On his second, he made a one-handed catch.

But Carson, bidding to become the first team since Santa Margarita in 2006 to defeat Poly and Mater Dei in the same season, has hurt itself with some ragged play. The Colts have fumbled twice, were sacked in the end zone and committed six penalties.

With one flick of his wrist, Poly quarterback Chaiyse Hales seems to have solidified his role after briefly being replaced by Nicholas Pope. Hales’ third and final pass of the first half was a 46-yard touchdown to Richard Smith. Jeff Turley has a pair of two-point conversion runs.

Poly will get the ball first to start the third quarter.
