Football: Van Nuys shows signs of life

Sean Pollard used to be in the City Section playoff picture every season when he was defensive coordinator for Troy Starr at Woodland Hills Taft.
He took over as head coach at Van Nuys three years ago. It was not exactly the most sought-after position. The Wolves’ program was going nowhere, but Pollard wanted the challenge of building something from scratch. After seasons of 2-8 and 3-7, the Wolves are 5-2 this season and stunned Sylmar, 10-7, last week, beating the Spartans for the first time since the 1980s.
‘We’re definitely heading the right way,’ Pollard said.
The Wolves’ top player this season is 6-foot-3 senior Iheanyi Obinna, who plays quarterback, receiver and cornerback.
A couple more wins in the Valley Mission League, and Van Nuys will be in the Division II playoffs, which would be quite an accomplishment.
