Boys’ basketball: Bell is City Division III champ

It’s all over and Los Angeles Bell has upset Van Nuys Grant, 45-39, in the Los Angeles City Section Division III championship game at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The second-seeded Eagles (20-5) outscored Grant 27-18 in the second half, led by Mychael Deas’ 18 points and six rebounds. Daniel Lopez added 11 points and four assists, Angel Grimaldi had nine points and Jesus Chiquete grabbed 10 rebounds for the Eastern League winners. Bell was 15 of 40 from the field and made 7 of 18 three-pointers.

Senior center Gor Plavchyan had 11 points and 13 rebounds and Travis Wilson scored nine points for the top-seeded Lancers (27-6), who led 21-18 at halftime. Grant, the East Valley League champion, shot just 31.8% and was 1 of 12 from three-point range. There were five lead changes and two ties.
