Baseball: Rio Ruiz undergoes surgery to remove blood clot

Standout two-sport athlete Rio Ruiz of La Puente Bishop Amat is in stable condition and resting after undergoing a procedure to remove a blood clot in a vein in his neck, Coach Andy Nieto said Friday.

Here’s updated information from a phone conversation on Saturday with Ruiz’s father, Rudy.

Ruiz began complaining about a dead arm two weeks ago. He had swelling in a biceps muscle in his shoulder, Nieto said. A blood clot was discovered and the procedure took place on Friday.

Nieto said Ruiz is waiting to see a specialist to determine how long he might be sidelined.

He is the second potential first-round draft choice to be sidelined by a medical problem this month. Studio City Harvard-Westlake lost standout pitcher Lucas Giolito to an elbow injury.

Ruiz, a third baseman, committed to USC for baseball.
