Playa del Rey St. Bernard has dropped its varsity football program, CIF Southern Section spokesman Thom Simmons confirmed on Tuesday.

It comes as no surprise. Head coach Larry Muno resigned after the first day of practice, and the team lost players after the school made a change in how it gives out financial aid.

The big problem is schools who were scheduled to play St. Bernard are now scrambling to find replacement games.

Westchester, Hueneme, Damien, Bosco Tech, Verbum Dei, La Salle, Marshall, Bishop Montgomery and Cantwell-Sacred Heart had games scheduled with St. Bernard.

The Southern Section will consider eligibility on a case by case basis for players who decide to transfer from St. Bernard to another school. Ditto for the City Section. Players will likely receive immediate eligibility as long as there was no undue influence or prior contact with a school.

The school will field a junior varsity team under new coach John Bibb.
