Man With Rifle Shot in Leg, Police Say

Share

A 23-year-old Costa Mesa man who pointed a .22-caliber rifle at a police officer was shot once in the leg, arrested and taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach Monday, police said.

When two officers responding to an “unknown trouble” call knocked on the door of 1985 Pomona Ave., Apt. D, in Costa Mesa about 5:22 p.m. Monday, Timothy Alexander Skonos opened the door and the officers observed that he “was holding a .22-caliber rifle at his side,” said Lt. Tom Lazar.

The officers commanded Skonos to drop the rifle, but instead “the suspect then raised the rifle and pointed it at the officer who was giving the commands,” Lazar said. “Both officers then fired their revolvers at the suspect, hitting him once in the leg.”

Investigation with the assistance of the Orange County district attorney’s office is continuing, Lazar said.
