Ryan Walter and Pierre Mondou each scored in the final minute of regulation play Monday night, helping the Montreal Canadiens battle the Quebec Nordiques to a 4-4 tie at Montreal.

The Canadiens had been outplayed and were trailing, 4-2, but Montreal got a power-play advantage and took out goaltender Steve Penney for an extra skater, setting the stage for Walter’s 11th goal of the season at 19:11 of the third period.

With only eight seconds left in regulation and the Canadiens still using an extra attacker, Guy Carbonneau won a face-off in front of the Quebec goal, then passed the puck to Mondou, who fired in the tying goal from just outside the crease.

Michel Goulet scored two goals for the Nordiques, who have won only 4 of their last 12 games and lost all four previous meetings with the Canadiens this season. Montreal has a six-game unbeaten streak.

Minnesota 4, New York Islanders 3--The North Stars scored three power-play goals to defeat the Islanders at Bloomington, Minn.

Minnesota (12-19-6) broke the game open with three straight goals in the second period, getting even for a 6-1 loss to the Islanders in November. The Islanders, third in the Patrick Division, dropped to 20-15-1. Minnesota remained in fourth place in the Norris Division, one point behind Detroit.

Buffalo 6, New Jersey 4--Mike Foligno scored two goals, and Dave Maloney collected three assists as the Sabres defeated the Devils at Buffalo.

The win was the Sabres’ fifth in a row and sixth in their last seven games. The Devils have lost five of their last six.

Phil Housley, Ric Seiling, Dave Andreychuk and Norm Lacombe also scored for Buffalo. Larry Driver, Doug Sulliman, Dave Pichette and Aaron Broten scored for New Jersey.

The teams combined for five power-play goals, three by the Devils. Coming into the game, New Jersey was 19th in the NHL in power-play scoring, while the Sabres were ranked No. 1 in penalty-killing.

Pittsburgh 4, Detroit 4--Troy Loney scored his third goal of the season with 3:04 remaining in the third period to give the Penguins a tie with the Red Wings at Detroit.

Loney took a pass from Gary Rissling at the side of the net and slammed the puck past goalie Greg Stefan. It was one of only four shots by the Penguins in the period.

The teams played a scoreless overtime period, and while both teams had power-play opportunities, neither managed a shot on goal.

Bob Manno had given Detroit a 4-3 lead with 5:04 remaining in the second period when he beat goalie Roberto Romano with a 30-foot slapshot.
