Kentucky’s Kenny Walker came up with his usual oustanding performance Monday night. But this time, he had a supporting cast.

Walker scored a career-high 36 points, including a game-breaking four-point play in the final minute and two crucial free throws with eight seconds remaining, at Louisville, Ky., to lead the Wildcats to a 92-89 victory over Kansas.

Kentucky also received help from freshman guard Ed Davender and little-used senior Troy McKinley, both of whom came off the bench to score 20 and 12 points, respectively.

“Davender had a fine night, as did McKinley,” Kentucky Coach Joe B. Hall said. “Their play in the first half when we were behind made the difference. We have been looking for that kind of help.”

“Walker was fantastic, always there,” Kansas Coach Larry Brown said. “We just got rattled and got beat on the boards.”

With his team down, 76-70, Walker, a junior forward, scored six points to power a 10-2 Kentucky run that put the Wildcats ahead by two.

Kansas countered with a basket, but Kentucky’s Winston Bennett hit a layup to put his team back in front. Walker then blocked a shot, raced down to the other end and was fouled after he converted a slam-dunk.

Kansas cut the lead to 90-89 with five seconds left as Danny Manning, who scored a career-high 30 points, made a layup.

Walker then stepped to the free-throw line, where he hit both ends of a one-and-one.

The win, Kentucky’s third straight, improved Kentucky’s record to 4-4. Kansas fell to 8-2 and had a six-game winning streak snapped.

Washington 64, Lamar 59--Sophomore guard Clay Damon’s 17-foot jumper broke a tie with 2:31 left to give Washington its 17th straight home victory at Seattle.

Damon’s basket broke a 55-55 deadlock after forward Paul Fortier, who led the Huskies with 18 points, tied the score moments earlier.

With the victory, the Huskies improved their season record to 8-2, while Lamar slipped to 4-6.

Pacific 73, Montana St. 70--At Stockton, Andy Franklin scored 27 points, matching his career high, and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Tigers (4-5) withstood a late rally to hand the Bobcats (3-8) their fifth straight loss.
