Holly Lynn Huffman, celebrating New Year’s Eve at Disneyland, said she thought someone had thrown an egg until she looked down and saw blood on her leg.

The 34-year-old Navy dentist was rushed to UCI Medical Center, where doctors removed a .38-caliber slug from her left thigh, said Sgt. Jack Jansen of the Anaheim Police Department.

Lt. Huffman was sitting on her boyfriend’s shoulders Tuesday morning about five minutes past midnight when she was hit. The bullet, Jansen said, probably “fired up in the air, came down and hit her in the leg.

“There’s no telling where it came from,” he said, but it probably had been fired outside the amusement park.

After treatment at UCI Medical Center, Huffman was transferred to the U.S. Naval Hospital in Long Beach. The wound was superficial and the bone was not broken, Jansen said.

Huffman is stationed at a Marine Corps base in San Diego.
