Surgery appears to have saved rock drummer Rick Allen’s severed left arm, although it is too early to be certain, a hospital spokesman said Wednesday.

The 21-year-old musician with the highly successful British heavy-metal rock band Def Leppard was in “stabilized and slightly improved” condition Wednesday at Sheffield’s Royal Hallamshire Hospital, the spokesman said.

Allen’s arm was severed in a car crash in northern England Monday, and surgeons stitched it back on in a four-hour operation the same day.

“The surgeons say that the operation appears to have been successful but it will be a few days before they can be completely sure,” the spokesman said.

Police said the sports car Allen was driving crashed at high speed on a highway near Sheffield. The car left the road on a curve and overturned, catapulting Allen into a field.

Allen’s girlfriend, Miriam Barendsen, 22, of Amsterdam, who also was in the car, was treated at the hospital for head injuries. Hospital spokeswoman Faith Faulkner said Barendsen had recovered from her injuries and was to be discharged Wednesday.

Allen and the four other members of the group started playing together in Sheffield. Def Leppard’s last album, “Pyromania,” has sold more than 6 million copies.
