BYU Gets Two Other No. 1 Votes, but Florida Isn’t Totally Forgotten
In addition to being voted No. 1 in the nation by both wire services Wednesday, Brigham Young University was named winner of the MacArthur Bowl and the Grantland Rice Trophy as the top college football team in the country.
However, The Sporting News--the only dissenter thus far--named Florida as its No. 1 team and listed BYU as its fourth-ranked team.
The MacArthur Bowl is presented by the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame, while the Rice Trophy is awarded by the Football Writers of America.
The Sporting News rankings, selected by football writer Joe Marcin, listed Florida first, followed by Nebraska, Washington, BYU and Boston College.
“I base it on strength of schedule and consistency of play,” Marcin said.
