San Diego Prep Basketball : Free Throw Shooting Helps University

In a game that was decided at the free throw line, the University High School Dons made 17 of 26 free throws to defeat the Granite Hills Eagles, 77-63, in the second day of the Santana Tournament at Santana High Thursday night.

In contrast, the Eagles could manage only a 9-of-20 performance at the free throw line.

The Dons built a 10-point lead in the first quarter, extended it to 39-24 at the half and never relinquished control.

University got balanced scoring from its starting lineup, including guard Pat Marsh, who scored a game-high 25 points. Sean Giles scored 16 points, Matt Miller 15 and James Wilson had 10.

The Eagles were led by Tom Shawcroft, who scored 23 points. Teammates Vernie Wutzke and Todd Parker scored 16 points apiece.

In other Santana Tournament games:

Patrick Henry 74, Mt. Miguel 32--The score was 6-6 midway through the first period, but the Patriots exploded with 31 unanswered points to take the Matadors out of the game. With the score 41-10 at the half in favor of the Patriots, the starters were rested in the second half. Patrick Henry center Howard Wright led all scorers with 17 points, while Kensey Smith scored 12.

Santana 59, Clairemont 30--Jeff Barry scored 22 points for the second night in a row to lead the Sultans past the Chiefs. Santana, 2-0 in the tournament, also received 17 points from Jim Tatum and 11 from Brian Heacock. Clairemont, which trailed 25-12 at the half, was paced by Mark Wyckoff, who scored 10 points.

St. Augustine 60, Hilltop 40--The Saints won for the second night in a row behind 16 points apiece from Paul Larkin and Terry Rogers. St. Augustine led only 27-19 at halftime but pulled away in the second half, despite the efforts of James McCurty, who led Hilltop with 14 points.

In the Peninsula Classic at Point Loma High:

Point Loma 65, Chula Vista 63--Darrell Jackson scored 27 points and Rodrick Stidum had 12 as the Pointers (10-2) held off the Spartans (7-5). Chula Vista had whittled an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit down to two, but Keith Yarrell’s jumper at the buzzer missed. Darnell Woods led the Spartans with 17 points and Edgar Harvey added 13.

Santa Fe Christian 58, Southwest 57--Santa Fe trailed, 57-51, with a minute to go but rallied to upset the Raiders. Kevin Greer scored a basket and Paul Clark followed with a free throw and two more field goals in the final minute. Clark paced Santa Fe with 23 points and Greer added 17.

In the Baron-Optimist Tournament at Bonita Vista High:

Lincoln 55, Crawford 49--A three-point performance in the second quarter proved to be the Colts’ undoing, despite outrebounding the Hornets, 40-27. Crawford (3-7) trailed at the half, 24-15, but came back with 20 points in the third period to take the lead, 35-34. However, they were outscored 20-14 in the decisive fourth period. Bryon Grayson led the Hornets (3-9) with 14 points. Lamont Horne scored 12, while Kenarsie Ceaser had 11. Crawford was led by Mark Hayes, who scored 16 points.

Marian 65, Alpha (Canada) 41--Javier Nunez scored a game-high 28 points to lead the Crusaders to victory, only their third win of the year against six defeats. Alpha, from British Columbia, dropped to 11-3. Claude Joseph contributed 10 points for Marian. Alpha was led by Nenado Barbis, who scored 18 points, and Gionni Debonis, who had 15.

Madison 68, Richmond (Canada) 41--Todd Lance scored a season-high 18 points and Jimmy Dean also scored 18 to lead the Warhawks (6-4)to their second consecutive tournament win. Madison led 34-23 at halftime before putting the game away with an 18-4 run in the third quarter. Tony Blount added 10 points for Madison. Richmond was paced by Steve Taylor, who scored 15 points.

Morse 77, Bonita Vista 58--David Gayden scored 18 points and Chris Jeter added 10 to lead the top-seeded Tigers past the Barons. Morse trailed by one after the first quarter, but took control with a 26-8 second-quarter surge for a 52-35 lead at halftime. David Fulmer paced Bonita Vista with 22 points.
