Celebrity attorney F. Lee Bailey and Lawrence D. Murray, a former San Francisco assistant district attorney who prosecuted Bailey for drunk driving 1982, each won a round in a suit brought by Murray, who accused Bailey of libel and slander. A federal court judge dismissed part of the complaint, ruling that Bailey did not libel Murray by questioning Murray’s competence in Bailey’s book about the trial, “How to Protect Yourself Against Cops in California and Other Strange Places.” However, the judge found sufficient grounds for Murray to proceed with a suit charging Bailey slandered him on a television show when Bailey said that Murray had himself been arrested for drunk driving and assault.
