The son of a California Highway Patrolman and an Explorer Scout assigned to a sheriff’s station were arrested early Friday for allegedly impersonating peace officers and being abusive to motorists they stopped in Hacienda Heights. Eric E. Maldonado, 18, was wearing his father’s CHP uniform complete with gun and badge, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Richard Shaw. Joe V. Rivera, 19, who is assigned to the sheriff’s Pico-Rivera station, reportedly was in his Explorer Scout uniform. Shaw, of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau, said Maldonado’s father, whose full name was not available, works at the East Los Angeles CHP office but was on vacation. The two young men were arrested after angry motorists began to call the sheriff’s City of Industry station about 1 a.m. to complain that law officers had stopped them without cause at the intersection of Ameluxen Avenue and Palm Drive and had been insulting. They were booked at the Industry station on suspicion of impersonating police officers.
