Fund’s Future Questioned:The future of a $15,000 fund for math, science and performing arts programs will be considered by the school board tonight. In 1983, Laguna Beach Unified School District trustees set aside $15,000 and intended to spend only the interest. But a new board is now seated and Supt. Barnes said he wants to see if new trustees want to use the money for something else. “This is just giving them an opportunity to reflect if this is what they want to do with the account,” he said. Barnes is not making a recommendation on the fund. The Laguna Beach Educational Foundation, a nonprofit, fund-raising group for the district, has proposed setting up a similar fund, Barnes said. If it does, the district’s fund might be redundant and the school officials might have better uses for the $15,000, he said.
