A huge, white cloud of poison gas belching from a chemical plant threatened a Swedish town of 35,000 people. Police urged all those who might have breathed the gas to seek treatment and told other inhabitants of Karlskoga, 150 miles west of Stockholm, to stay indoors. A spokeswoman for the Bofors chemicals and armaments group, which owns the plant, identified the gas as Oleum, derived from sulphuric acid and oil. Police said there was no risk of an explosion. More than 100 people reported to an emergency center set up to treat those who breathed the gas.
