Point guard Tommy Amaker said this week he had thought about a rematch with Washington ever since the Huskies knocked Duke out of the second round of the NCAA West Regional last spring.

The second-ranked Blue Devils avenged that two-point loss Saturday with a 71-59 victory, but they didn’t talk about revenge after the game at Durham, N.C.

All Amaker and leading scorer Johnny Dawkins, who finished with 19 points, could talk about was Washington’s Detlef Schrempf.

Both said the 6-9 West German native, who finished with 15 points, was one of the best players in the country. They said Schrempf was “big, talented, very strong and a great ball-handler.”

Duke (12-0) and Georgetown are the only Division I teams still undefeated.

Schrempf led Washington (10-4) with 15 points. Paul Fortier had 14 and another German, center Chris Welp, added 11.

Oregon St. 56, Kansas St. 55--Freshman guard Eric Knox’s free throw with two seconds remaining helped Oregon State avoid an upset by Kansas State at Manhattan, Kan.

Knox’s foul shot helped the Beavers come back from a 54-49 deficit with just under four minutes to play. Oregon State (13-1) outscored the Wildcats 7-1 down the stretch as Kansas State dropped to 9-4.

The last time the two teams played was in 1981, when the Wildcats upset the then-second-ranked Beavers, 50-48, in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Stanford 55, Arizona 51--Center Kent Seymour sank two free throws with three seconds left to seal a victory for the Cardinal at Stanford.

Seymour, who only scored five points--all late in the game, grabbed a key defensive rebound and was fouled by Wildcat freshman Craig McMillan before making the two pressure free throws.

Arizona fell to 11-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Stanford is 9-5 and 1-3.

Arizona St. 77, California 70--Sophomore guard Steve Beck and freshman forward Chris Sandle had 17 points apiece to lead a balanced Arizona St. scoring attack that propelled the Sun Devils to a victory over California at Berkeley.

The victory left the Sun Devils with a season mark of 7-6, including 2-1 in Pac-10 play. California fell to 8-5 overall, 0-3 in the conference.
