Sen. Lowell P. Weicker Jr. (R-Conn.), comparing South Africa to Nazi Germany, became the first U.S. senator and the first elected Republican arrested outside the South African Embassy in Washington in a series of protests against the white-ruled nation’s apartheid policies. “The principles that South Africa espouses are no different from the principles that Nazi Germany espoused and against which many Americans died,” Weicker said. The senator was charged with violating a city law that requires protesters to stay 500 feet away from the embassy they are picketing.
