Man’s Claim That Robber Shot Him Fails to Convince

A Fullerton man who told Costa Mesa police he was shot when accosted by a robber last week was himself arrested Tuesday in connection with an armed robbery in Los Angeles.

Costa Mesa officers said Paul Dennis Fletcher, 28, was arrested after police found a lack of evidence to support his story of how he was shot and after they matched his description to that of a robbery suspect shot while escaping the scene of the Los Angeles robbery.

Fletcher told police he was shot last Thursday in Costa Mesa’s Wilson Park after being approached by a man who robbed him.

Detectives investigating the case located a teletype from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Foothill Division describing a robbery in which the suspect was shot while escaping. After conferring with Los Angeles authorities, they determined that Fletcher matched the description and other evidence in that case.

Los Angeles police arrested Fletcher in his wife’s Costa Mesa residence Tuesday. He was charged with armed robbery.
