10th Book Critics Circle Awards
Top honors for a novel about a North Dakota Indian tribe and a first-time prize in criticism highlighted the 10th annual National Book Critics Circle Awards.
Louise Erdrich received first prize in fiction for her first novel, “Love Medicine,” about the Turtle Mountain Band of the Chippewa tribe in North Dakota.
The award was one of several announced Monday by the organization of 400 book critics and book review editors.
For the first time a prize in criticism was awarded to Robert Hass for his book, “Twentieth Century Pleasures: Prose on Poetry.”
Other awards:
-- Poetry: Sharon Olds for “The Dead and the Living.”
-- General Nonfiction: Freeman Dyson for “Weapons and Hope.”
-- Biography: Joseph Frank, “Dostoevski: The Years of Ordeal, 1850-59.”
-- Critics Award: Alida Becker of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
The awards, in the form of scrolls, will be handed out at an awards dinner Jan. 31.
