New Governor Takes Oath in Washington, Lists Priorities

Democrat Booth Gardner was sworn in Wednesday as Washington’s governor, and he called on lawmakers to help him tackle problems of employment, education and the environment.

Gardner, a 48-year-old millionaire businessman who defeated Gov. John Spellman, warned that Washington state faces economic problems.

Nearly 200,000 Washington residents cannot find work, markets are desperately needed for farm products, the timber industry is reeling, roads are crumbling and people have lost confidence in public schools and colleges, he said.
