A $17-million lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles Superior court against the International Longshoremen’s and Warehousemen’s Union by nine women who said they were refused registration by the union because they are married to other union members. The women said they were selected for jobs last September, received written confirmation in December and were told they were needed as soon as they completed physical exams. In January, they said, the union refused to register them because of possible “favoritism” and “nepotism” charges. That act, they charged, deprived them of “valuable employment provided to other non-married employees.”
