Bird Is Early--Tells of Plans to Run Again in ’86
Nineteen months before the legal deadline, Chief Justice Rose Elizabeth Bird has announced her intention to seek a new 12-year term in the November, 1986, election.
Bird sent a letter Tuesday to Secretary of State March Fong Eu saying that before the state constitutional deadline of Aug. 16, 1986, “I shall file a declaration of candidacy to succeed to the office of Chief Justice of California.”
The letter was sent and made public in response to reporters’ inquiries, Lynn Holton, spokeswoman for the state Judicial Council, said today.
The state Constitution says a Supreme Court or appeals court justice must file a declaration of candidacy during the 30 days ending in Aug. 16 of the election year, or the governor can nominate a successor.
Conservative Republicans are organizing campaigns against Bird and other appointees of former Democratic Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr.
