Local News in Brief : Funds for Experiment in Traffic Flow Sought

Share

The Los Angeles City Council Wednesday approved an application for a $250,000 state grant to use a six-mile stretch of Topanga Canyon Boulevard between Chatsworth Street and Ventura Boulevard for an experiment that could speed traffic flow.

The project, if approved by the state Energy Commission, would use a computer to change traffic lights in response to traffic volume.

Although intended to cut gasoline consumption by reducing waiting times at lights, the project would also expedite traffic, said Donald R. Howery, manager of the city Department of Transportation.

Funds for the program would come from a special account derived from judgments and settlements against oil companies in legal actions brought by the federal government for price gouging between 1973 and 1981.
