Contaminated Shed Being Demolished at Boy Scout Site

BOWLING GREEN, Va. — Workers on Wednesday began demolishing a storage shed contaminated by dioxin at the Army’s Ft. A. P. Hill, where 30,000 Boy Scouts gathered for a Jamboree in 1981 and where Scouts are scheduled to return in July.
The building materials and contaminated soil around the structure are to be sealed in 55-gallon steel drums and stored in a remote area of the base until researchers develop a permanent method of disposal, probably incineration, Environmental Protection Agency officials said.
Boy Scout officials announced last week that the dioxin found at the base posed no danger to the Scouts during their 1981 Jamboree.
