Israel’s army may be mighty on the battlefield but it is losing its fight against the telephone company, which cut off more than 1,000 military phone lines today because of unpaid bills.

National security was not been jeopardized and no hot lines were cut off, a Defense Ministry official said, adding, “But for sure . . . this will not help the army with routine work.”

Zvi Amid, managing director of Bezek, the government-owned telephone company, told Israel radio: “We’ve had it up to here. No solution has been found, and the communications minister authorized the cutting off of telephone lines--mainly those used for the army’s administration--starting yesterday morning.”
