Reagan Won’t Visit Dachau, Aide Says
President Reagan does not intend to visit Dachau, the German concentration camp in World War II, during his May 2-4 trip to Bonn to attend the economic summit, White House spokesman Larry Speakes said Thursday.
“Dachau is something the President doesn’t want to do,” Speakes said.
There had been reports that a visit to Dachau was one possibility for Reagan while he is in West Germany.
It is understood that Reagan feels present-day Germans were not involved in the Nazi Holocaust and that a visit to Dachau could be misconstrued.
Victory celebrations are being planned in Europe to commemorate the 40th anniversary May 8 of the Allied defeat of Germany.
Reagan is expected to be in Europe and take part in the celebration.
