Texas Ranger pitcher Dave Stewart, arrested early Wednesday for alleged lewd contact with a male transvestite prostitute, surprised club officials by showing up to receive the team’s “good guy award” at a banquet.

Stewart told the audience Friday night he wanted to apologize to the fans, his teammates and the Rangers’ organization.

“My decision in coming here was difficult because I did not want to embarrass anyone further,” he said. “All I can say is good guys make mistakes, too. This is the only public statement I will make. Thank you for your compassion. Anything else on this matter will have to come from my lawyer.”

Stewart received a round of applause and standing ovation from the crowd of about 500 people at the annual winter banquet.

Stewart’s attorney, Ed Boyko, said: “As far as I’m concerned this is probably the most insignificant offense and charge I’ve ever had any dealings with.

“As soon as the L.A. police solve all the murders and rapes in their city, they can go around taking care of the other stuff.”

Boyko said he had not yet made up his mind on whether to advise Stewart to plead guilty or not guilty. “A lot depends on their (prosecutors’) attitude,” he said.
