Reagan to Spend V-E Day in Germany, Then Visit Spain

President Reagan will make state visits to both West Germany and Spain after the economic summit of industrialized nations in early May, the White House announced today.

Presidential Spokesman Larry Speakes said that after the seven-nation summit in Bonn on May 2-4, Reagan will remain in the country until May 8, the 40th anniversary of V-E Day, the date Nazi Germany surrendered to the Allies to end World War II in Europe.

On May 8, Speakes said, the President will travel to Spain for a two-day state visit.

The spokesman said details of where Reagan will go in the two countries have not been decided.

It appears from the schedule that Reagan will observe V-E Day in Germany before flying to Spain later the same day.

There has been considerable maneuvering by the West German government, as well as by the World War II Allies--including the Soviet Union--about how and where to celebrate the end of the war in Europe.

Reagan has made clear in recent days that he wants West Germany included and that the ceremonies should mark the postwar recovery and growth of the Western alliance, not just the defeat of the Axis powers by the Allies.
