One of the oldest mining operations in Tennessee is shutting down because it is unable to compete with cheap imports of foreign copper, the owners say.

Bruce Davis, president of Tennessee Chemical Co., said about 900 workers will be laid off as the company phases out mining operations at Copperhill in southeastern Tennessee over three years.

The company will retain 400 employees at its more profitable chemical plant, he said.
