A security guard accidentally shot a woman in the arm at an El Cajon supermarket Thursday when he rapped his .45-caliber pistol on the windshield of her car and the gun went off, El Cajon police said. Karen Mary Rogers, 29, of El Cajon was listed late Thursday in “stable, fair condition” with injuries to her right arm at Alvarado Community Hospital, said Barbara Regas, hospital nursing supervisor. The security guard was Gilbert Eugene Jorgensen of San Diego, an employee of Alpha Beta supermarkets, said Lt. Leo (Buck) Posey, El Cajon chief of detectives. No charges have been filed pending submission of a report to the district attorney’s office, Posey said. He said the accident occurred about 2 p.m. Thursday when Jorgensen and another Alpha Beta security guard, William Alan Reeves, were investigating a possible shoplifting involving Rogers. The security guards followed Rogers to her car, where, according to Jorgensen, he “rapped the front windshield with his gun” to draw the driver’s attention, Posey said. A police investigation of the windshield tended to support Jorgensen’s explanation that the shooting was accidental, Posey said.
