Eighth-grade students and their families are invited to attend an informational meeting regarding a Jewish Values Weekend that will meet in May and is sponsored by the Orange County Bureau of Jewish Education and by area synagogues.

Ida Marks, bureau executive director, will discuss the Shabbat retreat weekend, to meet May 3 through 5, where students will participate in group discussions and be introduced to the Adat Noar program, a year-round series of Sunday afternoon classes, assemblies and activities for ninth-graders.

A March 26 session will meet by appointment only at the bureau headquarters for families unable to attend one of the other sessions. The office is at 12181 Buaro St., Garden Grove.

Irvine United Church of Christ will host “Beyond War,” two discussion meetings to be held from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Sunday and Feb. 17.

“Beyond War” is an orientation meeting where participants are led in discussions of ways to deal with a worldwide conflict that do not include war.

A Starlight Social will be held at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Laguna Presbyterian Church, 415 Forest Ave., Laguna Beach. The Senior Class Band, a 17-piece dance ensemble, will play big-band hits from the 1930s and ‘40s. Participants are encouraged to come in costumes from that era.

“Learn About Irvine’s No. 1 Problem--Drug/Alcohol Abuse” is the title of a program to be presented at 7 p.m. Thursday at University United Methodist Church, Irvine. The church, in conjunction with the National Council on Alcoholism of Orange County, is sponsoring the free program.

Dr. Max Schneider, a physician and educator, and Irvine Police Chief Leo Peart and Irvine teen-agers will participate in the presentation. The church is at 18422 Culver Drive. For further information, call 835-3830.

Gary Parker, an associate with the Institute for Creation Research, will present a lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday at Stoneybrooke Christian School, Laguna Niguel. Parker will present a scientific model of creation in light of recent geological discoveries in the Grand Canyon.

“Jewish Alcoholics: Say It Isn’t So!” is the topic of a speech to be given Friday after the 8 p.m. Sabbath service at Temple Beth Ohr, La Mirada.

The talk, to discuss the reasons for an upsurge in the number of Jewish alcoholics, will be given by Susan Zepeda, deputy assistant director of public heath in Orange County and administrator of the county’s alcohol program. Zepeda also is president of the Statewide Assn. for Alcohol Program Administrators and is completing a Ph.D in social psychology.

The annual Mission and Stewardship Rally sponsored by the Presbyterian Synod of Southern California will be held from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. next Saturday at Trinity United Presbyterian Church of Santa Ana. Elder Harriet Nelson, moderator of the 196th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church USA, will be the featured speaker at the morning worship.

A leadership training conference for “Beginning Again . . .,” a Catholic ministry for separated or divorced people, will meet from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 23 and 24 at the Marywood Center, 2811 E. Villa Real Drive, Orange.

The conference is open to anyone interested in working in this volunteer ministry. Cost is $5 per day and includes all materials, lunch, beverage and snacks. Registration ends Feb. 10. St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, Fullerton, will dedicate its new Allen 4000 digital computer organ at the 9 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. services Feb. 10. The evening service will feature a recital by Michael Burkhardt of the Zion Lutheran Church of Anaheim. A buffet dinner, preceding the recital, will be served at 5 p.m.

All United Methodists in the Santa Ana district are invited to participate in a committee workshop day to meet from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Garden Grove United Methodist Church.

The workshops will concern all church committees, including trustees, Council on Ministries, administrative board, education, evangelism, finance, pastor parish, United Methodist Women, United Methodist Men, worship, young adults and youth groups.

Mitch Glaser of the Jews for Jesus organization will speak at the 9:15 and 10:45 a.m. services next Sunday at Mission Hills Baptist Church. Glaser has traveled extensively overseas under the auspices of Jews for Jesus and will talk about his experiences.

A community luncheon sponsored by the Good Shepherd Preschool in Buena Park will begin at noon Wednesday. A $3 donation will be asked. Proceeds will go toward new equipment for the nonprofit school.

William Lee, a Christian Science lecturer, will speak at 8 p.m. Monday at Turtle Rock Community Park, 1 Sunnyhill, Irvine. His topic will be “Spiritual Hope Fulfilled in Scientific Healing.”

Lee, a member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship, will discuss the origins of Christian Science in in his speech. The free lecture is sponsored by First Church of Christ, Scientist in Irvine. Child care will be provided.

Perry Carter will be installed as choral director after the 11 a.m. worship service Sunday at Community Presbyterian Church of San Juan Capistrano. Carter has experience in choral conducting, music education, arranging, professional singing, consulting and program designing for schools and church music departments.

Carter supported himself through undergraduate school at Chapman College by singing in Dapper Dan’s Barbershop Quartet at Disneyland. He later became the leader and arranger of the quartet after earning a master’s degree in music from the University of Southern California.
