Youth Arrested, Cuffed at Mother’s Funeral
A teen-ager leaning over his mother’s coffin following graveside services at a snow-swept cemetery was arrested on seven misdemeanor warrants and handcuffed in front of other mourners.
Police Chief Robert Wadman said today that he would determine whether the plainclothes officers acted properly Wednesday in arresting Ronald Dunbar, 18, during services for his mother, Judy, 37.
“They could have had the decency to wait until he got out of there and said, ‘Hey, Ronnie Dunbar, we want you to come with us,’ ” Lonnie Byers, 22, Dunbar’s cousin, said.
The misdemeanor warrants, some a year old, included one each for fleeing arrest, reckless driving, disorderly conduct and leaving the scene of property damage. The three others were for traffic violations. Dunbar was held in the city jail overnight.
His mother, who suffered a stroke four years ago, died after choking on food at an Elkhorn nursing home.
