WestAir Airlines plans to begin service between Orange County and Fresno next Thursday, two days after the county Board of Supervisors is expected to approve the carrier’s application to operate at John Wayne Airport.

Earlier this week, the county Airport Commission recommended approval of WestAir’s application, the Chico-based airline said.

With the final OK, WestAir would become the fourth commuter line on the Fresno-Orange County route in two years. The previous three airlines have failed, leaving the route without service for weeks at a time.

There has been no carrier since Dec. 13, 1984, when Far West Airlines ran out of money and suspended operations indefinitely.

At the same time it begins serving Orange County, WestAir hopes to inaugurate flights between Fresno and Ontario International Airport in San Bernardino County.

“We’re confident our application and plan for operations will be approved” by the Orange County supervisors, said Craig Belmondo, WestAir’s vice president of marketing.

“Our plan is to begin service Feb. 14, linking Orange County and Ontario with Fresno with three round-trip flights daily.”
