The Region : Police Station Lot Bombed

Share

A bomb exploded in a planter in a parking lot next to the Fountain Valley police station shortly after 10 p.m., but there were no injuries and no destuction of any vehicles, police Lt. Rod Gillman said. The only damage caused was the destruction of some plants and a crater in the pavement two feet in diameter and one foot deep, Gillman reported. About four employees in the police station were shaken up by the “blast, which was a loud, sharp concussion,” he said. No one took credit for the bombing and officers could not immediately ascribe a motive for it. Gillman said no shrapnel was found, but that deputies from the Orange County sheriff’s bomb squad were searching the area in the 10200 block of Slater Avenue for any debris or other clues. No one was seen planting the explosive device, but Gillman said vehicles “were seen leaving the area immediately after the blast, but sometimes people use the lot next to our parking structure for a shortcut or for traveling to an automatic (bank) teller.”
