Tennis : Shaefer Surprises Fourth-Seeded Maleeva in Florida
Kim Shaefer upset the women’s fourth-seeded player, Manuela Maleeva, Thursday night to join tournament favorites Ivan Lendl and Martina Navratilova in the third round of the $1.8-million Lipton International Players Championships tennis tournament.
Shaefer, a 27-year-old right-hander, ousted the 17-year-old Bulgarian, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Maleeva had upset Chris Evert Lloyd to win the 1984 Italian Open and also took the U.S. Clay Courts and Swiss Open titles last year.
Meanwhile, Lendl, who was forced into a first-set tiebreaker, eliminated John Sadri, 7-6, 6-0, and Navratilova won the first nine games to defeat Robin White, 6-0, 6-3, in 50 minutes.
Other seeded men posting second-round victories were No. 4 Anders Jarryd of Sweden, who eliminated Tim Gullikson, 6-1, 6-3; No. 6 Johan Kriek, who beat India’s Vijay Amritraj, 6-4, 6-0; No. 8 Joakim Nystrom, who defeated Ernie Fernandez of Puerto Rico, 6-3, 7-5, and No. 9 Yannick Noah of France, who ousted Terry Moor, 6-2, 6-4.
Among the women, No. 7 Hana Mandlikova of Czechoslovakia beat Kathleen Cummings, 6-2, 6-3; No. 10 Carling Bassett of Canada defeated Rosalyn Fairbank of South Africa, 6-2, 6-3, and No. 11 Bonnie Gadusek eliminated Terry Holladay, 6-0, 6-1.
In another second-round match, Melissa Gurney of Palos Verdes, Calif., reeled off 12 straight games to beat Jamie Golder, 6-1, 6-0, after dropping the first game. In a late match the night before, Gurney eliminated Kathy Horvath, 6-1, 6-3.
In a first-round match that ended at 1:47 a.m. Thursday, Jonathan Canter, a 19-year-old right-hander from Beverly Hills, Calif., pulled off a big upset, defeating No. 7-seeded Kevin Curren of South Africa, 6-3, 5-7, 7-6. Canter won the final four points to take the tiebreaker, 7-3.
