Kasparov Captures Second Victory in as Many Games

World chess title contender Gary Kasparov defeated defending champion Anatoly Karpov in the 48th game of their marathon match, cutting Karpov’s lead in the series to 5-3.

It was Kasparov’s second victory in as many games and third straight triumph without a loss. He needs three more victories to win the crown, while Karpov, 33, needs only one to retain it. Other games were draws.

When play resumed Saturday, on move 41 after Friday night’s adjournment, Kasparov, playing white, wasted no time in capitalizing on his pawn advantage and removing the main threat to his strategy, Karpov’s remaining queen’s flank pawn.

With that pawn gone, Kasparov, 21, moved inexorably to victory, advancing a cluster of pawns and his king until Karpov resigned on move 67. Here, in algebraic nota tion, are the moves:
