It Might as Well Be Spring for a Few Days

The springlike weather that surprised inland valley communities with temperatures in the 80s Tuesday is expected to continue today as warm air hovers over San Diego County.

High temperatures reached 82 Tuesday in Fallbrook, La Mesa, Ramona, Spring Valley and at the San Diego Wild Animal Park and reached 77 at Lindbergh Field, National Weather Service forecasters reported.

The mild heat wave ended two weeks of below-average temperatures. Temperatures had not topped 72 since Jan. 5. The high at Lindbergh Field failed to approach the Feb. 12 record of 86 degrees, but it jumped 12 degrees above the norm of 65.

The dry air flowing from the east also forced humidity below 20% in coastal areas and inland valleys.

The weather resembles a Santa Ana condition, but lacked the winds Tuesday to fit the pattern, said forecaster Frank Perdue. Winds are expected to pick up in mountain areas today, however, where gusts may reach 30 m.p.h., Perdue added.

The warm days, expected to continue today and Thursday, sharply contrast with the chilly nights. The unusally wide range of temperatures is expected to prevail. Daytime highs of up to 78 inland will fall to 43 to 50 tonight, and inland highs of up to 82 are expected to again plunge to nighttime lows around 40.
