NBA Roundup : Jordan Scores 49; Bulls Win in Overtime

Michael Jordan scored six of his 49 points in overtime Tuesday night to lead the Chicago Bulls to a 139-126 victory over the Detroit Pistons at Chicago.

The victory snapped Chicago’s four-game losing streak and gave Detroit its third consecutive loss.

Kent Benson’s three-point play gave the Pistons their only points of overtime and a 126-124 lead with at 4:14 left. Sidney Green’s basket tied the score and Jordan’s three-point play put the Bulls ahead for good, 129-126, with 3:23 remaining.

Vinnie Johnson scored 28 for the Pistons and John Long added 26.

Portland 111, Boston 103--Darnell Valentine scored 23 points while Clyde Drexler and Jim Paxson added 21 apiece as the Trail Blazers built a 26-point lead in the second quarter and surprised the Celtics at Portland.

Sam Bowie had 16 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots for the Blazers, who won three straight games for the first time since November.

Larry Bird had 25 points and 11 rebounds for the Celtics.

Houston 126, Phoenix 114--Ralph Sampson scored 27 points and the Rockets won for the eighth time in the last 11 games by beating the Suns at Houston.

Houston led by 26 points in the third period, but the Suns went on a 25-10 spree to slice the Rockets’ lead to 103-92 with 7:53 left. Sampson, named MVP in the All-Star game Sunday, scored nine points the next 3 1/2 minutes to give Houston a 116-100 lead.

Akeem Olajuwon had 24 points and Lewis Lloyd 22 for Houston. Larry Nance scored 29 for the Suns.

Philadelphia 124, Indiana 116--Andrew Toney scored 29 points and the 76ers became the second team in the league to win 40 games by defeating the Pacers at Indianapolis.

The Pacers shot 57% in the first half to take a 63-57 lead at intermission, but the 76ers forged in front, 93-85, after three quarters and pulled away with a 17-5 run at the outset of the final quarter.

Herb Williams scored 33 points for the Pacers.

Milwaukee 111, New Jersey 103--Sidney Moncrief scored 32 points and Terry Cummings added 25 as the Bucks snapped a three-game losing streak by turning back the Nets at Milwaukee.

The Nets, who had a four-game winning streak broken, trailed by 20 points in the third quarter, but closed to within 105-101 on Buck Williams’ 10-footer with 1:40 left in the game.

The Bucks pulled away when Craig Hodges hit a short jumper and Moncrief followed with a breakaway dunk for a 109-101 advantage.

San Antonio 127, Kansas City 109--George Gervin and Johnny Moore scored 23 points each and the Spurs beat the Kings at San Antonio to climb over the .500 mark for the first time since Nov. 16.

Gervin hit his first eight shots and the Spurs roared to a 67-47 halftime lead, which they increased to 81-55 midway through the third quarter.

Reggie Theus scored 19 points for the Kings, who lost their 11th straight road game.

Dallas 131, Cleveland 112--Rolando Blackman scored 35 points and the Mavericks broke away from the Cavaliers in the third quarter at Richfield, Ohio, and went on to their fourth straight victory.

Blackman scored 12 points in the third quarter as Dallas pulled away from a 62-62 halftime lead and built a 104-84 lead after three quarters on Mark Aguirre’s three-point shot at the buzzer.

World B. Free scored 26 points for Cleveland.

Denver 131, Atlanta 107--Calvin Natt scored 29 points and English scored 23 as the Nuggets routed the Hawks at Denver for their 10th straight at home.

The victory enabled Denver to maintain its two-game advantage over Houston for the lead in the NBA’s Midwest Division.

Utah 122, Golden State 110--Adrian Dantley scored 35 points at Oakland and the Jazz handed the Warriors their 20th defeat in 21 games.

The Jazz went ahead to stay, 46-41, by scoring 13 straight points early in the second quarter. Mark Eaton scored five points and blocked three shots 4 1/2-minute stretch.

Purvis Short scored 25 points for the Warriors.

Seattle 109, Washington 94--Tom Chambers scored 34 points and the SuperSonics spoiled Gus Williams’ homecoming by rolling past the Bullets at Seattle.

The victory snapped Seattle’s four-game losing streak, while Washington dropped its fifth game in its past six starts.

Williams, who received a standing ovation from the crowd, scored nine of his 11 points in the first quarter and made only 5 of 21 shots against his former team.
